Howard Rosen studied law at Exeter College, Oxford University, and graduated with a degree in Jurisprudence in 1977. After qualifying as an English solicitor in 1980, he joined a London solicitors’ firm before becoming in-house counsel for international leasing companies specialising in the legal and tax aspects of international finance.
At the beginning of 1989, he returned to private practice as an English solicitor by establishing an English law firm in Zug, Switzerland. He specialises in international commercial and finance law, international leasing law and trusts.
Howard is a contributor to many journals, including the Uniform Commercial Code Law Journal, Asset Finance and Leasing Digest, Leasing World, the International Financial Law Review, the UK Law Society Gazette, Private Client Business, the Uniform Law Review, Trust and Trustees, European Review of Private Law, the Cape Town Convention Journal, Railways of the World and Railways Africa.
He edited and co-authored the book Leasing Law in the European Union and is a regular chairman and speaker at international seminars and conferences.
As Chairman of the Rail Working Group set up by UNIDROIT, the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law, he has been closely involved in the drafting and implementation of the 2007 Luxembourg Rail Protocol to the Cape Town Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment. As such he works closely with governments and international organisations, as well as with financiers, operators, manufacturers and professional advisers in the rail industry.
Howard is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority in England and is a member of the Law Society of England and Wales, the International Bar Association, and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. In addition, he is a member of the Swiss Bar Association and the Bar Association of the Canton of Zug. He is a correspondent of UNIDROIT, a member of the Institute of Directors, London, and past-President and an honorary councillor of the British-Swiss Chamber of Commerce.
He was President of the Council of British Chambers of Commerce in Europe (COBCOE) between 2005 and 2012 and was Chairman of its Public Affairs Commission until 2016. In 2017 he received the COBCOE Chairman’s award for Special Contribution to Business.
Aside from being the principal of Howard Rosen Solicitors, he is also Managing Director of Rosetrust AG, Zug, which he set up in 1993, and Chairman of Aviation Advocacy Sàrl, Nyon.
In the 2003 Queen’s Birthday Honours, he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to British business in Switzerland. He is married with two sons and lives near Zurich. Among his hobbies, he sings in a choir, skis, is an avid football supporter and a keen acquarist. Howard speaks English, German and French.
